Beth’s follow on book is in the same style as her Altered Photo Artistry, and thankfully does not duplicate the instructions in the first book. It has the same very clear layout and instructions.
The book shows you how to apply all the various filters and effects in Photoshop Elements to your photos, with clear illustrations of each effect, so you know just how to produce them yourself. Beth also gives approximate ranges for all the adjustables on the filters. You can spend weeks playing with all the variables, and it is good to have a starting point. This section including colour adjustments, is the meat of the book, but it also covers a few options for collage or repeating images which you could then print onto fabric.
The only shortcoming in my opinion is that there is almost no stitching or embellishing detail, apart from a few examples in the gallery with no information.

Beth Wheeler skillfully guides you through many interesting ways to alter your photographs. I purchased this book because I hope to begin printing photos on fabric, but many of her techniques are also useful on regular photos. I have tried several of the techniques in the book, (square in a square, selective filtering, photo merge, extracting and replacing to name a few) and have been able to achieve all with a reasonable level of success. I have really only begun to sample the many techniques offered and as I work my way through this book, I know there are many more photographic adventures that await. I highly recommend this book for those who are looking to work with photographs as an art form.

This book is written for Windows using Photoshop, it comes with a bonus CD. It starts with very simple instructions on finding your way around Photoshop. Then moves on to effects. It’s easy enough for anyone to work their way through Photoshop filters. However, the strength of this book lies in what Beth does with the altered images. I like the positioning, merging, overlaying and multiple layers. Discover the secrets of digital collage. The colour section is also of interest including a faux cyanotype. I also liked the layout section. However, I thought the abstraction section was simply what anyone could do using Photoshop – there are better ways to abstract using Photoshop for fabric and quilting than shown here. The embellishment section looks like an afterthought to fill a page – it’s far too short. The gallery and examples of work are very good and this book is very worthwhile. As I have found with all books and education presented by Beth Wheeler, the step-by-step directions are very well written and easy to follow. This book represents a great way to combine the love of quilting with the ever evolving electronic media to prepare a very special piece. And it is written so clearly that makes it easy to follow.
